Little Blue Penguin Bench
Birch Aquarium, San Diego, California, 2022
The world's smallest penguins are making a big splash! Also known as the Fairy Penguin, Little Blues live in Australia and New Zealand and are just over a foot tall. These adorable seabirds face a number of threats that impact their conservation status, which is currently listed as Near Threatened. Fun fact: groups of Little Blues are known as a “raft” or a “huddle.”
This project was spearheaded by the amazing Brian Gibson who sculpted the Little Blues. He called upon Endangered Concepts to help create a rock bench that, you guessed it—is filled with plastic waste! Plastic pollution continues to threaten Little Blues who can easily become entangled in fishing nets and mistake bits of plastic for food. You can visit the Little Blues and their bench at the Birch Aquarium in San Diego.
