Light-Footed Ridgway’s Rail

People’s Park, Imperial Beach, California, 2021

Follow the Rail Trail! See the hatchlings as they leave the safety of their nest in the tall cordgrass of the salt marshes and begin to forage in the surrounding mudflats and shallows of the Southern California Coast.

Federally and state endangered, protecting their habitat is essential for their survival and the survival of all the other species that live their lives on this beautiful coast. This sculpture honors the work of the Southwest Wetlands Interpretive Association and by scanning the QR code on the plaque viewers can make an instant donation to support their efforts to conserve these estuaries and wetlands.

The interior of this piece is made from plastic waste collected from the beaches, parks, and public spaces of Imperial Beach. On the backside of this sculpture you can look through the ‘truth portal’ to see some of this plastic debris. By arresting plastic inside of public art we keep it out of the oceans and shine a light on this urgent issue of plastic pollution on the environment.

Special thanks to the Imperial Beach Arts Bureau for making this possible and to the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition for funding this piece.
